Scenario

1

Alex is a very good student, consistently scoring high grades, however he is very disruptive in class, often walking in late, the talking and joking at the back of the class. He finds activities easy and will often pass comment on the simplistic nature of the class activities. This makes some of the other students uncomfortable, and puts them off asking questions. Alex is also keen to point out when he thinks you are "wrong".

How would you deal with this?

You probably need to speak to Alex about this and point out that others may not find the work as easy as he does. Getting the group to define ground rules for behaviour might help as the start of a session. You could see if he would like to help with scribing during sessions (to give him something to do) or help you with setting up class activities. Alex also needs to think about gaining a wider view of "right" and "wrong" perhaps doing some research work to see that different sources can be contradictory. He also needs to be challenged by yourself and the group when he makes sweeping statements, if you start this others will follow! There are many ways of dealing with the situation and yours may be different to this, as long as the situation is dealt with and resolved without de-motivating Alex that is the most important thing.Check your answer
