PAWS CASES

Case 1

A 6 week old with bronchiolitis.  RR 63rpm, HR 170pm, systolic BP 70mmHg,  CRT 3secs, temperature 37oC, Alert, SaO2 92% on 2 litres of oxygen
Calculate the PAWS score for this infant.

PAWS chart

Answer

RR        = 3
HR        = 3
BP        = 0
CRT      = 1
Temp     = 0
AVPU    = 0
SaO2      = 3

Total      = 10

The difficult aspect in this case is scoring the oxygen saturations. The child has SaO2 of 92% on 2 litres of oxygen. Therefore as you can see in this figure they score 3 points for SaO2 of 90-94% in O2.

Case 2

A 15 month old with pneumonia.  RR 62rpm, HR 170pm, systolic BP 75mmHg,  CRT 3secs, temperature 39oC, Alert, SaO2 92% in 5 litres of oxygen

Calculate the PAWS score for this infant

PAWS chart 12-23 months

Answer

RR          = 10
HR          = 3
BP          = 0
CRT       = 1
Temp     = 3
AVPU     = 0
SaO2       = 3
Total      = 20

Case 3

A 30 month old with suspected septicaemia.  RR 36rpm, HR 143pm, systolic BP 85mmHg,  CRT 4secs, temperature 38oC, Alert, SaO2 98% in 2 litres of oxygen
Calculate the PAWS score for this infant.

PAWS chart 2-3 years

Answer

RR          = 1
HR          = 3
BP          = 0
CRT       = 1
Temp     = 0
AVPU     = 0
SaO2       = 1
Total      = 6

Case 4

A 5 year-old with possible meningitis RR 24rpm, HR 108pm, systolic BP 90mmHg,  CRT 2secs, temperature 38oC, responsive to voice, SaO2 98% in air
Calculate the PAWS score for this infant.

PAWS chart 4-7 years

Answer

RR          = 0
HR          = 0
BP          = 0
CRT        = 0
Temp     = 0
AVPU     = 1
SaO2        = 0
Total      = 1

Case 5

A 9 year old with pyelonephritis.  RR 24rpm, HR 120pm, systolic BP 100mmHg,  CRT 4secs, temperature 38oC, Alert, SaO2 99% in air
Calculate the PAWS score for this infant.

Answer

RR          = 1
HR          = 3
BP          = 0
CRT        = 1
Temp     = 0
AVPU     = 0
