History

If possible, ascertain if patient has:

General symptoms
 

Symptom

UGIB

LGIB

Pale

Shortness of breath

Postural dizziness

Abdominal pain

Nausea and Vomiting

 

Melaena

(dark sticky offensive stools due to partly digested blood)

 

Hematemesis

(coffee ground vomit)

 

Hematochezia

(fresh blood in or with stools)

This may occur in a massive UGIB due to rapid transit through bowel
