Some patients who are acutely ill are at risk of developing airway obstruction, usually due to reduced consciousness. Occasionally patients will deteriorate due to a primary problem with the airway. Prompt recognition and management of the obstructed airway will help prevent further deterioration and secondary problems due to hypoxia.
