Working with students

When you choose to work with medical students it is important to remember:

  • you are sharing your experiences to help students learn, not to give yourself a platform to rant about the NHS.
  • to use any negative experiences in a constructive way - i.e. not making students feel guilty for things outside their control but rather teaching them how we do want them, as future doctors, to treat us.
  • to relate your experience to their level of knowledge - you will probably know much more about your condition than they do.
  • to listen to students as well as talk to them!
  • that there are set times for teaching sessions to begin and end - beware of talking too much!
  • you will not be expected to take part in anything you are not comfortable with.
